Resin Tutorial: Hand Painted Sunset Resin Magnet

Welcome to this tutorial on creating a beautiful hand-painted sunset resin magnet! Resin art is a fun and creative way to make unique and personalized pieces, and magnets are a practical and useful way to showcase your artwork. In this tutorial, you will learn how to mix and pour resin, hand-paint a beautiful sunset using acrylic paints, and finish by doming the piece with resin for a glossy effect. With just a few supplies and a little bit of creativity, you'll have a stunning magnet to add to your collection or to give as a gift. So, let's get started!

A video showing all of the steps explained in this tutorial is also available on my YouTube channel:

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare and mix a batch of epoxy resin as per manufacturer's instructions.

Step 2: Pour the clear resin into the silicone mold. Fill just a third of the mold.

Step 3: Wait for the resin to cure.

Step 4: Paint on the palm tree and horizon using black acrylic paint.

Step 5: Paint the sun using yellow acrylic paint.

Step 6: Wait for the paint to fully dry.

Step 7: Prepare and mix a batch of resin as per manufacturer's instructions.

Step 8: Divide the resin into 3 mixing cups.

Step 9: To the first mixing cup add orange resin pigment.

Step 10: To the second mixing cup add pink alcohol ink.

Step 11: To the third mixing cup add violet alcohol ink,

Step 12: Mix each cup well making sure that the pigments are thoroughly and evenly distributed into the resin to avoid curing issues.

Step 13: Pour the colored resin mixtures into the silicone mold - with the orange resin poured at the bottom section, the violet mixture poured at the top and the pink colored resin poured in the middle section. Continue pouring the resin as needed until the mold is full. Make sure that the orange resin mixture exceeds the horizon area so that it shows from the front.

Step 14: Wait for the resin to cure.

Step 15: When the resin has fully cured, de-mold the resin from the silicone mold.

Note: If you are using the latest version of the silicone mold sold in my store, the resin piece will come out shiny. In which case, skip steps 16 to 18 and move on to step 19.

Step 16: Prepare and mix some resin as per manufacturer's instructions.

Step 17: Dome the resin piece by pouring a small amount of resin at the center. Using a stir stick, gently move the resin towards the edges adding more resin as needed. Add small amounts of resin at a time to avoid an over spill. Make sure to work on a level surface.

Step 18: Wait for the resin to cure.

Step 19: Remove the backing from the magnet and stick the magnet on the back of the resin piece.
